About the Allegheny Intermediate Unit

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit, also known as the AIU, is part of Pennsylvania's public education system and is one of
29 Intermediate Units created in 1970 by the Pennsylvania State General Assembly. We provide specialized educational services to Allegheny County's 42 suburban school districts and five vocational/technical schools.
Located just a few miles from the city of Pittsburgh in the scenic Waterfront commercial development in Homestead, Pennsylvania, the AIU employs more than 1,800 employees at 436 sites and operates 10 family centers and three schools for exceptional children. With nearly 140 programs for infants, young children, students, and adults, the AIU receives funding through federal, state, county, and private grants.
Leadership
The AIU's Board of Directors is comprised of 13 elected members selected from Allegheny County's 42 suburban public school districts. The Executive Leadership Team consists of a group of executive employees who govern the daily activities of the agency and make recommendations to the Board of Directors.
Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan
As part of multiple efforts to continually improve its programs and services, the AIU embarked on a strategic planning process in March 2010. During this process, the AIU defined new mission and vision statements, as well as a strategic plan. Feedback committees of internal and external stakeholders were engaged through electronic surveys, focus groups, individual interviews, and through objective development teams. The strategic plan was approved by the AIU board in early 2011 and is currently being implemented and fulfilled.
