How Is Your Child Developing?

Development is individual to each child.  This chart presents an overview of child development from birth to five years of age.  It is important to keep in mind that some children may achieve various developmental milestones earlier or later than the average but still be within the normal range.

Speaks 10 to 15 words that are understandable and meaningful.

Points to pictures in a book.

Shows a sense of humor (plays tricks)

Plays well alone for 3 to 5 minutes.  Plays with an adult and copies actions.  Responds to praise and reward.  Enjoys playing alongside another child. 

3 years

Goes up steps putting both feet on each step.

Stands on one leg.

Draws a circle.

Turns pages of a book, one at a time.

Listens to a short story for 5 minutes.

Names common objects.

Speaks in three-word sentences.

Helps adults by putting away toys when asked.

Imitates simple household chores (sweeping, dusting, etc.).

Plays cooperatively with other children.

Likes to share.

4 years

Walks up steps, one foot for each step.

Throws a ball forward.

Dresses self. 

Washes face and hands.

Draws a square and a triangle.

Talks clearly.

Tells a story.

Uses adult speech sounds. 

Uses complete sentences.

Has mastered basic grammar.

Matches objects and colors.

Counts to five.

Follows a 2-step direction.

Asks what and why questions.

Prefers to play with other children.

Initiates play with friends.

5 years

Marches and dances to music.

Catches a large ball.

Buttons and zippers own clothing.

Prints simple letters.

Speaks clearly and can be understood by others not in the family.

Tells long tales.

Counts to ten.

Knows colors.

Repeats songs or finger plays.

Carries out direction well.

Cooperates in small groups. 

Shares and takes turns.

Enjoys simple table games requiring taking turns.
