Frequently Asked Questions

What are intermediate units?

Intermediate units are regional educational service agencies.  Created by the Pennsylvania state legislature in 1970, they provide efficient, high-quality programs to public school districts and non-public/private schools.  Intermediate units also serve as liaisons between school districts and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).

Which school districts are served by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU)?

The AIU serves all of the 42 suburban school districts in Allegheny County.  There are approximately 119,302 public school students attending 215 schools in the county.

Why were intermediate units created?

To assist in providing each child with equal access to a quality education. School districts may vary widely in their access to the finances and resources necessary to provide an appropriate education.  Intermediate units work to pool the resources of districts so that all students in the region benefit, regardless of shifting financial bases.

What is a program?

At the AIU, a program is an organized set of services designed to meet a public or school district need.  The AIU has nearly 140 different programs and services which serve learners of all ages and backgrounds.  Some of these programs are free.
