On July 24, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Liz Miller, Professor of Pediatrics, Public Health, and Clinical and Translational Science from the University of Pittsburgh to speak with Project SEEKS stakeholders. Dr. Miller presented the findings from the Healthy Allegheny Teen Survey, a comprehensive assessment of risk behaviors among high school students in our region from the Allegheny County Health Department, University Center for Social & Urban Research (UCSUR), and The Pittsburgh Study. This survey gathered responses from nearly 4,500 teens, including from eight schools involved in the Project SEEKS grant program. The survey provides valuable insights into the myriad challenges youth face in and out of their schools.
It covered a broad range of topics affecting social-emotional well-being. Topics include distracted driving, seatbelt use, substance abuse, violence, bullying, depression, and much more. The data collected is instrumental in helping understand the current landscape of teen risk behaviors. This will enable us to refine our approach and provide impactful strategies to support teens in our communities.
Dr. Miller’s presentation was both enlightening and thought-provoking, offering a clear picture of the areas where intervention is needed and where we can make a difference.
We look forward to collaborating further with Dr. Miller and applying these insights to enhance our efforts in promoting positive outcomes for the young people we serve.
