A message from Aaron Skrbin, Ed.D., AIU Director of Safety and Security
As the change of season brings cooler weather, shorter days, and the holiday season, schools face unique challenges when it comes to safety. In addition to ongoing concerns such as bullying and mental health, there are seasonal issues that require special attention to ensure a safe learning environment for students and staff. Below are some critical school safety topics relevant to this time of year.
Weather-Related Safety
The winter months often bring harsh weather conditions, including snow, ice, and colder temperatures. Schools need to prioritize outdoor safety, ensuring that students are properly dressed for the weather and equipped with appropriate gear. Sidewalks and entrances should be regularly salted or sanded to prevent slips and falls. Additionally, schools should have clear plans in place for weather-related disruptions, such as snow days or late starts, and communicate these plans effectively with parents and guardians.
Emergency Drills and Preparedness
As the seasons change, it’s essential for schools to update and practice emergency preparedness plans. While fire drills remain a priority, schools should also conduct drills for winter-specific emergencies such as snowstorms or power outages. It’s also important to revisit emergency protocols in case of school closures due to extreme weather, ensuring that students are safe and that parents have a clear understanding of procedures.
Mental Health and Holiday Stress
The holidays can bring stress and anxiety for many students, and the shorter days with less sunlight can impact mental well-being. Schools should be proactive in offering mental health resources and support to students, especially those who may feel isolated or anxious. Creating a positive, inclusive environment where students feel safe to express their emotions is crucial. Providing access to school counselors and mental health resources, along with offering stress-relieving activities, can help students cope during this potentially difficult time.
Holiday Safety Awareness
During the holiday season, it’s important to prioritize home safety. If you haven’t already, check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they’re working properly. Be careful not to avoid overloading electrical outlets and never leave interior holiday lights on when you go out. If you burn candles, they should always be monitored and blown out when unattended. These simple precautions go a long way in contributing to a safe holiday season.
School safety is an ongoing priority. The holiday season brings joy and happiness for many, but we cannot forget our friends, family, colleagues and students that sometimes struggle during this time of year. Awareness, consideration and compassion go a long way in letting others know they are not alone. Adherence to basic safety considerations also goes a long way to maintaining a safe and festive environment.
And with that, I wish you all happy, healthy, enjoyable, and safe, holiday season!
