Spotlight on Innovation: Enhancing Accessibility for Blind and Visually Impaired Students

enhancing accessibility for blind and visually impaired students

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU) Blind and Visually Impaired Support Program (BVISP) proudly introduces Patricia D’Ascenzo, our new Accessible Instructional Materials and Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) Coordinator. This innovative role redefines our commitment to supporting students with visual impairments by ensuring they have timely access to customized materials and instructional strategies that meet their unique needs. D’Ascenzo’s leadership is already elevating the program’s impact on partner school districts, students, and families.

In her first months, D’Ascenzo has made remarkable strides. She secured cutting-edge resources for the program, including a Pix Blaster Braille embosser and Tiger Designer Software, through participation in the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network’s (PaTTAN) Tactile Boot Camp. These tools enable educators to produce tactile diagrams and braille materials tailored to individual students’ needs, ensuring seamless access to educational content. D’Ascenzo has also strengthened partnerships, such as collaborating with Carnegie Mellon University to explore innovative technologies for reducing barriers to digital content creation. Additionally, her work with the Library of Accessible Media for Pennsylvanians (LAMP) has ensured that BVISP maintains uninterrupted access to essential resources.

The reimagined coordinator position reflects AIU’s mission to advocate for equitable opportunities and its vision for all learners to reach their full potential. D’Ascenzo’s efforts embody this vision, driving excellence in accessible education and fostering collaboration among educators, families, and stakeholders. By leading professional development, mentoring team members, and modeling best practices, D’Ascenzo ensures that BVISP remains a regional leader in educational support for students with visual impairments.
