Mariana Ramirez, an 11th grade student at Fox Chapel High School, was named a 2025 Luminari Award Scholar. A Columbian immigrant, she reflected on navigating cultural differences with empathy and understanding throughout her four years in the USA. She described her journey to challenge stereotypes and inspire others to pursue their dreams. She aspires to lead with compassion and pursue a career as a travel nurse. With a deep appreciation for diverse perspectives, she hopes to use diplomacy to build connections, foster mutual respect, and honor her parents’ sacrifices.
Mariana’s English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher Kathy Rombach said, “Mariana approaches every challenge with perseverance, supports her peers with genuine compassion, and consistently puts in the effort to achieve her best. Her dedication and positive attitude make her a joy to teach and an inspiration to those around her.”
Mariana and fellow Luminari Award Scholar Mira Frawley, a ninth grade student at Winchester Thurston Upper School, will each receive a scholarship to attend Luminari’s ‘I Want to be an Ambassador!’ summer camp. The camp culminates with a trip to Washington, D.C., where students will engage with diplomats, visit embassies, and address real-world challenges—equipping them with tools to foster respect and collaboration.
Fox Chapel science teacher Jennell Wolfe said, “Mari’s genuine desire to learn, confidence, and leadership qualities have earned her this well-deserved award. Her dedication and resilience throughout high school have truly set her apart.”
