Parent Group | Sunrise School

Sunrise School parent group

Parents who care for special needs students with disabilities are not alone. We have developed the Sunrise School Parent Group to provide support, information and guidance to our families.

We host several meetings each year and usually feature an hour-long guest speaker followed by a roundtable discussion by the parent group. Previous topics of conversation have included:

  • Disability services
  • Medical rights
  • Transition considerations
  • Obtaining power of attorney
  • Vocational programs
  • Safety needs
  • Financial planning
  • Planning the annual staff appreciation day

The Sunrise School Parent Group originated in March 2012 and hosts meetings from 10-11 a.m. on certain Thursdays of the year. Parents are notified by email two weeks prior to the meeting. Meetings are currently virtual.

For more information, please email Sunrise School social worker Maria Korn.

Parent Testimonials

Hear what other parents are saying about Sunrise School and the parent group:

"Having a child with special needs can introduce parents to new fields of study, ways of seeing the world, and inspiring individuals and communities. It can also be rather daunting with whole new sets of vocabulary and paperwork to learn and handle. The speakers meetings and parent group sessions help to make this manageable by introducing focused topics that are most relevant to us. They also provide chances to share stories, resources and experiences that can really enrich our lives and those of our children. It is also a great opportunity see some of the teachers and staff that nurture our children’s talents and capabilities in action at Sunrise."
--Sunrise parent Jim Whitlam

"I have a son who went to Sunrise and we loved it, and it set the stage for his work at Goodwill. I'm now sending his brother there to give him the same opportunities for a great future."
--Sunrise Parent Kim Lyons
